SF Federal building - not on schedule but at least it’s Green

We all experience delays at almost every government agency (waiting in DMV lines, passport renewals) so why wouldn’t we all expect delays for the San Francisco Federal Building. Enough picking on the government. They will more than make up for the delays because when finally open the 18-story Federal workers home it will be the first office tower in the U.S. to eliminate air conditioning, at least over 70% of its area.

The tower’s narrow floor plate allows not only a healthy amount of sunshine to enter while the operable windows permit cross-ventilation for the entire floor. Perforated sunscreens cover the south facing windows, while automatic panels adjust to daily and seasonal climate changes.

With the sky gardens and open stairs, the building will hopefully create a social working environment and happy Fed workers.

The building’s un-sexy but somewhat overlooked use of slag cement lightens the concrete significantly which increases the reflectivity and overall natural light within the structure.

It will sure beat working at the local DMV.
