Green Insurance

When the insurance industry finally jumps on the Green building bandwagon we know that we’re onto something. Not too long ago, Fireman’s Fund began offering Certified Green Building Replacement and Green Upgrade coverage. The new coverage protects Green certified buildings and owners who would like to capture Green benefits.Soon more insurance companies will realize that Green buildings maintain advantages over normal buildings that include better durability, greater safety standards, and more solid construction and design.

It’s about time that some company took the Green leap of faith. The Fireman’s Fund program replaces damaged unique items like rainwater catchments systems or vegetated roof gardens, instead of them looking at these Green items and saying “What’s this and what does it do?” We’re also impressed with the upgrade package for buildings that aren’t quite green. If a fire damages a non-Green building then the insurance upgrade will replace the formaldehyde filled carpet with Green certified carpet or the energy sucking appliances with Energy Star appliances.

As for the other Green, a green certified (e.g. LEED) building can be eligible to receive five percent discount off of a Fireman’s Fund insurance policy. But all you green and soon-to-be Green homeowners will have to wait. For now the Green policies only apply to commercial buildings but they plan to hit the residential arena in the future.
