Paul Hawken - Raw and Uncensored

paul-hawken.jpg

Paul Hawken, the noted author, environmentalist, activist and soon to be Hollywood star (look for him in the eco-doc The 11th Hour) spoke last night at a San Francisco fund raising and awareness raising event for the (as Hawken calls them “very smart”) members of the Full Circle Fund. Normally the soft spoken Hawken hammers home the importance of the environment in relation to the economy and business but last night he shifted gears to raise more awareness of not just the environmental crises but more the social crises.

He spoke about how the economy not only marginalizes the environment but human beings as well. People will not likely care about the environment and that includes Green building, energy conservation, global warming and the whole Green trend if they don’t have jobs, a place to live and something to live for. He said that it’s time that we as a race stopped acting like “cowboys” and stated acting like humans.

We applaud him for his outspoken comments about human awareness and not just Green awareness. As a platform for getting involved he plugged the soon to be ginourmous Green database WiserEarth.org of which he’s involved. After all, getting involved and educated remains the key to creating a better world and that doesn’t just mean writing a check for carbon credits.

Anyone can view the WiserEarth database, but if you want to edit or add to one of the currently 107,000 orgs, or events, jobs and resources, simply register for free as a user. Search for WiserEarth’s orgs and other entries, through one of the 378 areas of focuses that covers the fields of environmental and social justice, such as: Worker’s Rights, Socially Responsible Investment, Democracy and Civil Society, Alternative Fuels, Fundraising, Local Food Systems and Human Rights Protection and Human Population Growth and Impacts.

Another useful thing to try, is to search for orgs in the city where you live in.
